What is Counselling?

Counselling and psychotherapy are talking therapies that can aid individuals deal with a variety of issues such as: stress, anxiety, depression, abuse, alcohol and drug misuse and often help the client make effective changes in their lives which can enhance wellbeing.

Psychodynamic Counselling

Psychodynamic counselling can be about exploring earlier events in life and how the ‘past lives in the present’. We look at patterns of behaviour – Often with the help of therapy, brings an increasing insight into relationships and behaviours in order to make changes if necessary.

Person-Centred

Person-Centred counselling offers a ‘here and now’ approach based on what the client brings to the counselling session each week with a view to each individual having the capacity, with the help of a therapist to trust their inner resources and find a way forward to make changes if necessary.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognative Behavioural Therapy is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders including phobias, addictions, depression, and anxiety.
Cognitive behaviour therapy is generally short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behaviour and emotions.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy is a humanistic therapy technique that focuses on gaining an awareness of emotions and behaviors inthe present rather than in the past. The therapist does not interpret experiences for the patient. Instead, the therapist andpatient work together to help the patient understand him/herself. This type of therapy focuses on experiencing thepresent situation rather than talking about what occurred in the past. Patients are encouraged to become aware ofimmediate needs, meet them, and let them recede into the background. The well-adjusted person is seen as someonewho has a constant flow of needs and is able to satisfy those needs.

Stop and Talk Fife provided me with an opportunity to talk through some particular issues that I had and provided a breathing space so I could move forward in my life

It was fantastic to have someone listen compassionately to my grievances, to help me understand how the past was affecting me. Other short term counselling has been inadequate at getting to the root of my struggles.
